AND THEN THERE WERE NONE

'VERA CLAYTHORNE' character sketch (@ a glance...) / To me...

A. physical description
-curly mid length hair, big eyes, strong frame, worried/skittish saunter, smily lips, nice/professional attire.

B. actions and speech
-thinks about Hugo A LOT (Cyril as well), seems to be day-dreamy, concerned/afraid tone, occasionally voices her opinion about 'important' things.

C. attitude and mien
-seems sort of dramatic and a bit overreactive, casual yet watchful, seems like she could go mad.
~
D. my feelings toward this person
-honestly, I think she is a bit of a spazz and I am sure she is one of my least favorite characters.

E. others reactions
-I didn't really look into it, but I am sure people had mixed emotions about her. I guess it could go either way, like or dislike her.

F. surroundings
-at one point, she locked herself in her room! Most of the time, she was on the island and outdoors or with everyone else doing something that frightens her.

CHAPTER 3
third assignment>>>

-choose 5 characters
-write 2 sentences telling what you know about him or her.

Anthony Marston:
Anthony Marston is a young man who is compared to God. He seems to be the type of man who is kind of rough and isn't too respectful. I think he is king of a fast car, pretty girls, and tanning. That is just my idea of what kind of a person he is.

Emily Brent:
She is a 64 (?) year old woman and she is very proper and everything is prim and in place. She has a sound to her voice that is commanding and she is the kind of person I might be a little afraid of. I would imagine her to be like my great grandmother. My grandmother is always sitting with her back perfectly straight, her voice is so articulate and precise, and she could practically be the queen!

Judge. Wargrave:
Wargrave is a retired judge and he has a voice of authority! He better have an authority if he was a judge! He has a mustache and apparently sentenced a man who killed an elderly woman. He seems bold and commanding!

Vera Claythorne:
Honestly, Vera seems to be a bit of a screeching spaz. She is always yelling when something happens and her comments are always so frantic and strange. She acts like she may have spent a few nights in the asylum. I would imagine her as a wiery girl with big twitchy eyes!

Dr. Armstrong:
Armstrong is a con who lies to women and makes up false diagnostic accusations about fantasy illnesses. This probably means that he will lie about something in the future. If you can lie about your whole career, then you can lie about small thing in life. He seems to be the type who drinks and acts like a rich man who gets everything he wants.

Clare-
I don't think you are still linked to the right pages. You should be linked to 'AND THEN THERE WERE NONE'. Most everyone linked to the 'here' page and that is incorrect.
Your assessment of the five characters you chose is right on. You've picked up on their ideosyncracies

CHAPTER 2
second assignment>>>

Assignment #2 (to be done in class on Wednesday, December 2)

  • Put a line between Assignment #1 and Assignment #2.
  • Read chapter two.
  • On your student page ABOVE assignment #1, choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
  • Find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
  • Write the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
  • In a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.

-I chose foreshadowing
example #1: "What a white bloodless ghost of a women!"
example #2: "Drowned. . . . Found drowned. . . . Drowned at sea. . . . Drowned---drowned---drowned. . . .No, she wouldn't remember. . . . She would not think of it! All that was over. . . ."
example #3: "It was the old nursery rhyme that she remembered from her childhood days. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE"
example #4: "Is Lady Constance Culmington expected, do you know? Rogers stared at him. "No sir, not to my knowledge."

These examples are all foreshadowing. Example #1, the ghostly women, could end up to be a suspect in the murders I think are going to take place later in the story. She is weird, 'queer', and very frightened looking. I would suspect her if someone was killed in my mansion! Example #2 could be the beginning of someone going crazy from a bad memory. When veterans come back from the war, they sometimes have psycological disorders because of their memories. Vera might remember this again later in the story and become crazy and kill someone! Another possible suspect. A crazy person is always a suspect. Example #3, I think, is surely how some of the guests will be killed. Choked, chopped, stung, swallowed, mauled, frizzled, and hung are only a few possible ways that some of the guests could die. There are ten lines of the poem and there are 10 guests; one decided fate for each guest. Example #4 might mean that Lady Constance Culmington could be another suspect in future murders. She invited Mr. Justice Wargrave, apparently, and she wasn't even there o greet him. She seems to be a very suspicious women and there i nohing that screams 'SUSPECT' louder than 'FISHY AND SUSPICIOUS'.

Clare-
You are so funny! I love your reasoning - very methodical.
Check your last few sentences along with the highlighted word; there are several mistakes.
AND check your directions carefully.
Mrs. M.

reading 5CHAPTER 1prediction
Chapter one, I thought, was kind of confusing in a way. I know it is mostly about how they are getting to the house and they are settling in and talking about how 'queer' everything is. It is sort of confusing going back and forth in between all of the people and they are all in weird situations that I don't understand. I think in chapter 2, weird things will start to happen and maybe someone will get killed. I could be wrong, though.

HAVEN'T READ YET
first assignment>>>

ASSIGNMENT #1

Before reading Chapter 1, consider the following:

  • how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?

  • how might the title be a clue to the story?

Assignment: Add a new page. Create a link from your page to the student pages. On your new page, answer the two questions above in one solid paragraph. In the second paragraph, make one prediction - something that you think might happen or something that you might expect about a character in the story.

1. how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
answer: A mystery and a narrative are different because the whole idea is different. A mystery asks a question over and over while a narrative is usually about something. It most likely does not include a mysterious crime and disappearing money or jewels. Narratives have problems and mysteries have questions to be answered.

2. how might the title be a clue to the story?
answer: And then there were none could mean something disappeared. It could be money, jewels, people, or many other things. Basically, it has to mean that there were several of something and all of the sudden, it al was gone, "there were none". There are many possibilities.

True! So which possibility will it turn out to be? That is the question! : > )
Hint: titles of books get capitalized and italicized; al is spelled all.
Did you follow ALL the directions?
Do you have all the necessary links?
